Need for Penang's mega project questioned

KUALA LUMPUR Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has left it to the people to assess whether Penang really needed the three bypass highways and a sea tunnel costing RM8 billion.

  The plan touted as the biggest infrastructure was announced by Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng recently.

  "The Penang Second Link bridge project is still ongoing and yet Lim has announced another multi-billion project.

  "Why should this mega project be announced when that bridge has yet to be completed. Why should billions of ringgit be spent?" asked Muhyiddin at the "An Evening with the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Youth" luncheon here yesterday.

  Muhyiddin said it would be wiser to not spend people's money on mega projects.

  "As it is, even environmentalists have begun to ask the impact of such mega projects on Penang."

  Speaking at a another function, Muhyiddin said the government was ever ready to assist the city folk to lead a comfortable life in urban areas, including those staying in private housing projects.

  "In the past, the government only approved assistance to those staying in public housing projects. Based on our visits, it is, however, no longer feasible to assist those in the public housing projects alone," he said during a working a visit to the Desa Pandan Perumahan Rakyat housing project yesterday.
