      • Gwynn Jenkins this is the tree in Kampong Kaka outside the public toilets - it was a beautiful mahogany tree until a deep v cut was administered around its girth. It lost all its leaves but with nursing it began to grow new leaves and then chop- so much for greening penang

      • Ganesh Kolandaveloo whenever there is a need to widen roads, or clear away trees that are "in the way", the council cuts off large chunks of the tree (hoping it will die naturally). sometime when the tree does not die and shoots strart to appear, they come back and trim it again. they when the tree dies, they happily come to remove it saying that it is dead. this is done over a 6 month period or more so as not to arouse any suspicion....so come back to this spot in a couple of months time to see what happens at this location.....i have seen such cases happen in the 1990s.

      • Ben Wismen actually, the base of the plant is bad enough. i don't understand. aren't there no guidelines? JKR has a whole volume on how to plant trees, where, and what to select. and yet, we have such cases in Penang. This is not the first time that I see concrete surfaces so close to the tree. Those staying in Farlim should take a look at the newly expanded road leading towards batu lanchang. the newly planted trees are slowly being suffocated/caged by the concrete poured around it. whatever happened to the understanding that open surfaces/ grass patches absorb water into the ground and prevents issues such as flash flood? also, what happened to the knowledge that concrete mixtures contain chemicals that are harmful to the development and growth of trees? and whatever happened to the fact that tree roots need more than that silly little space to grow, so that the tree can flourish? of course, the restricted space will eventually kill the tree, and the council (or whoever that is responsible) can spend more money to get new trees, or inappropriate trees

      • Gwynn Jenkins FOr a minute I thought you were talking about low cost flats, no space to grow, surrounded by harmful concrete, suffocated and caged - but I was wrong you were talking about planting trees - interesting comparison though - it seems everything is treated the same - no planning no respect. and they will never learn

      • Ben Wismen trees, people, in Penang, they are all the same. As long as some ppl out there can pull strings, and some others can act without the need of a brain, the results are still the same

      • Ben Wismen Gwynn Jenkins, this is beyond pruning. the whole tree is missing. only the base is left.

    • Yee Li Ong would that be a complaint filed by neighbor next to the tree? it probably disturbed their living?

    • Gwynn Jenkins Its bon ton so I will ask - but I doubt it as there was a lot going on for the festival and a lot of trees were already trimmed -it was the chainsaw that caused me concern as the totally floored tree is just close by.
