Teh asked to explain comments on hillslope projects

GEORGE TOWN: Tanjung Bungah DAP assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu (pic), who has been speaking up against hillslope development in Penang, has been directed by the party to explain his complaints.

Penang DAP chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the party had in a meeting last Friday instructed Teh to clarify his recent comments.

Chow said there were avenues for Teh to channel his grouses internally instead of making public statements in the media.

"Team spirit is very important," he said yesterday.

Teh had reportedly lashed out against hillslope projects in the state and called for a halt to such development.

He said there were more than 10 high-rise projects planned along hillslopes and seafront areas in his constituency.

The assemblyman pointed out that a 49-storey "super condo" was proposed in the area, adding that the developer was in the midst of submitting planning permission to the Penang Municipal Council.

He also noted that the people did not want high-rise or high-density development which threatened the environment and marred the scenic beauty of the area.

Teh said that while the state's stand was to disallow hillslope development above 76m high, he felt that "anything above 45m" must also be controlled.

Asked what action would be taken if Teh did not submit his clarification, Chow said he would only comment when the time comes.

Teh declined to comment when contacted.

It was also reported in a Chinese daily yesterday that Teh might be shown the exit by the DAP in the next general election for his "conflicting" comments.
