KUALA LUMPUR (April 19, 2012): The bill to amend the Environmental Quality Act 1974 which provides for, among other things, rewards for informers, was tabled for first reading in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas tabled the bill to incorporate a new section, Section 49B, which stipulates the rewards provision.

He said that under the amendment, the environment director-general would have the power to order that rewards be given to informers whose information led to the detection of offences under the act.

The amendment also provides for the protection of informers' identity. The court, however, has the power to reveal the identity of informers if it feels that justice cannot be served without making such a disclosure.

The amendment also involves the incorporation of Subsection 51(1)(tt) to grant power to the minister to make any regulation regarding environmental impact assessments.

Meanwhile, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin tabled for first reading the bill to amend the Medical Act 1971.

It aims at strengthening the Malaysian Medical Council and enhancing supervision for the medical profession, among other things.
