A SEVEN-STOREY Penang Syariah Court Complex costing RM36mil will be built on a 1.41ha site in Jalan Scotland-Jalan Batu Gantong.

It will replace several two-storey buildings which are being used as Syariah courts for nearly 10 years.

The court complex project, which is funded by the Federal Government, is expected to be ready in October 2014.

It will house a lower court, four High Courts, an Appeals Court and a library.

Other facilities include a police station, court rooms, witness rooms, remand rooms, multi-purpose hall, nursery, surau and cafeteria.

Penang Public Works Department senior assistant director (education/special project) Chew Poh Lye, who is the project manager, said work at the site started on Jan 5.

"The current progress of work is 4%," he told reporters after Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng visited the site yesterday.

He said an old double-storey building that was used as a storeroom for the state secretariat was demolished to make way for the project.

The building was once occupied by Penang Barisan Nasional and later turned into a Pemadam office.

Another building in the area which was used as prison quarters would be maintained.

The main contractor for the project is IHS Utara Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Lim said the state provided the land valued at RM73mil for the project.

Present during the visit were Penang Syariah Chief Judge Datuk Yusof Musa and state Public Works Department director Ahmad Latif Abdul Hamid.
