Gurney Drive fishermen net ‘empty promises’
FISHERMEN in Gurney Drive are up in arms over false promises of a lucrative compensation by a developer after demolishing their fishing area to build a luxury condominium.
The 32 fishermen, represented by Mohd Adnan Yusof, 68, alleged that the developer had not kept his promise of a RM400,000 compensation to them after the condominiums were built.
“Before they started building the condominiums, they promised us the sum. However, now they want to give us a ‘donation’ of RM500 each only instead,” he said.
“Obviously, we were not happy with the amount and rejected their offer. We sought help from our Pulau Tikus assemblyman Koay Teng Hai and they had a meeting, and came to us with a fresh offer of RM1,200 per person,” Adnan said in an interview recently.
He said they were still unhappy with the amount, considering the monetary losses that they faced.
“The amount is barely enough to cover our boat repairs, much less our losses,” said Adnan lamented.
Koay said he hoped the State Government and Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) would look into the matter and ensure all future developers comply by the rules and regulations.
A spokesman for the developer said they had no comment on the matter
Hi, may I know what is the latest update on this matter? Has it been resolved yet?
